Georgia's Journey of Hope 2014
- These are some of my shots from Georgia's Journey of Hope, a fundraiser for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) research. SMA is like ALS, but it affects babies and is always fatal. My friend and coworker Mike Lucas and his wife Kristen lost their daughter Georgia to this heartbreaking disease. There have been some encouraging results with stem cell therapy, which could actually lead to a cure for ALS, too. There is some more information about the run here journeyofhope.houseoflucas.com and about Georgia's illness here georgialucaswpg.blogspot.ca Thanks and kudos to my employer, Great-West Life for matching the donations raised by the Great-West Life team. It really makes me proud to work for a great company. I was happy to do my part to help by taking photos at the event, which was very well attended on this beautiful, foggy autumn day.
Swimming Deer
- I was fishing on Echo Lake with my buddy in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park, when we saw something in the water. As we got closer, we realized it was a deer. She seemed to know where she was going, and was surprisingly fast. We kept our distance so that she wouldn't be too stressed, but she still kept an eye on us and disappeared quickly once she got ashore.

Narcisse Snake Dens
- Every spring, tens of thousands of Red Sided Garter Snakes emerge from their winter dens to engage in a pheromone fuelled frenzy of fornication, with lots of small males swarming the larger females. You can hear the slithering as you approach the dens.

Doors of Dublin
- Buildings in Dublin used to be heavily regulated in terms of how their exteriors could be altered (not very much). The only thing that could be changed was the doors, so Dubliners took a lot of pride in their unique and beautiful doors. This could explain why there could be a market for a store like 'Knobs and Knockers' not just because of the cheeky name.

Whiteshell Cloudscapes
Bats
- Bats flitting about after sunset at Red Rock Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba. These photos were all taken around 10:00 PM on two different nights in late July. The bats came out about an hour after sunset, and stayed out for about half an hour. They were all around the same size, slightly bigger than robins, smaller than pigeons. In some of the photos, their bodies have a red or brown colour, lighter than the wings. I think that they are Big Brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), but I'm not sure and welcome any identification suggestions. Thanks to Bob Young of Bob's Bat Cave for helping with identification. www.thebatcave.ca/index.html Bats are hard to photograph in flight at night. These photos represent the best of dozens and dozens of shots, taken on four different nights, standing outside, being eaten alive by mosquitoes, firing off my camera whenever a bat flitted by and hoping for the best. I tried a few different focal length and flash brightness settings.

A Spring Day at the Duck Pond
- I went to the duck pond in Assiniboine park on Saturday, March 24th. There was still a bit of ice on the pond, and there were quite a few Canada Geese. They can be be pretty surly at the best of times, but a few of them were actively chasing off rivals. I went back on Sunday, and found that the pond had frozen overnight. The geese and ducks were slipping and sliding all over the place. While I was there, the sun came out and the ice started to melt, leaving open water in places where the geese and ducks would swim.
Fort Whyte Alive
- It was a beautiful spring day and I went with my family to our nearby nature reserve and education centre.

- I started playing around with Camera+ and Instagram on my iPhone. I use Aperture 3 for photo editing, but find this to be a lot of fun, in the spirit it is intended. Also, Aperture doesn't run on my iPhone. If the photo wasn't taken with my iPhone, it was edited on it. If you are on Instagram, I post under 'Bergersoft'.

WPC Landscape
- This set was taken at the Winnipeg Photo Community group shoot in Westview Park (affectionately known as Garbage Hill, since it is a landfill site). I love taking pictures in the evening light.
WPC Macro
- Photos from the Winnipeg Photo Community group macro shoot at the Assiniboine Park English Garden and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden.
Esplanade Riel
- The bridge over the Red River leading to Provencher Blvd is, in my opinion, one of the most visually appealing features of the Winnipeg skyline. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is under construction at one end, and Winnipeg's French Quarter is at the other. I took a few pictures on Canada day, but I was drawn back to the bridge the other night, thinking that the evening light would be really nice on the bridge. I was lucky to find the moon rising over the old St Boniface Basilica, and occasional flashes of heat lightning.

Winnipeg Architecture at Night
- Winnipeg has some great buildings, and they look great at night. I will add to this collection as I get some more shots.
Winnipeg Clinic
- The Winnipeg Clinic building on St Mary Ave is an example of modernist architecture. The building was first built in 1942 as a two-storey limestone and glass-block building, it was extended in 1947 and finally once more in 1961. The architect was Frank R Lount. I work across the street and keep expecting to see George Jetson zoom in, late for work.
Folk Festival
- We spent Saturday, July 10 at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in Birds Hill Park
Wolseley
- We went for a family bike ride down Wolseley Ave in Winnipeg, stopping to play and shop.
Metamorphosis
- The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a painted lady butterfly.
Roller Derby
- We were out for dinner and we saw a poster for Roller Derby. 'We've never done that before. It sounds interesting', we thought. It was a match between the Murder City Maidens and the Fargo-Moorhead Roller Girls. The photos speak for themselves.
Mating Coots
- A pair of coots in a mating display.
McGillivray Falls
- Some photos from the McGillivray Falls hiking trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park, from late spring 2010.
Old Favorites
- These are some of my old favorites.
Playing with Colour
- My new Nikon D90 has a feature called 'Picture Controls'. There are presets that mimic film types like Fuji Velvia or Kodak Ektachrome or Kodachrome. These were taken with the 'Vivid' setting.
Mayan Riviera 2010
- We needed a vacation. We went to Mexico. We had fun.
Summer 2009
- We spent a week at Red Rock Lake in the Whiteshell, and then a few days at Fairmount B&B near Minnedosa. I also got in a day of fishing on Lake of the Woods.
Owl
- The owl was perched on the wires just outside our family room picture window. It had a perfect view of our budgie. Mmmm... budgie. According to Dave Flight, it's an Eastern Screech Owl (gray morph). It didn't make any sounds when I saw it. Not a peep, a hoot or a screech.

- Some pictures our summer vacation in the Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods.
Jessica Lake 2006
- Some photos from our summer vacation at Jessica Lake in the central Whiteshell.

Manhattan 2005
- We managed to get a weekend away together in New York City.
Summer 2004
- We went on a bed and breakfast holiday across Western Manitoba, and spent some time at Lake of the Woods.
Mushrooms, Fungus, Moss and Lichens
- I love finding mushrooms and fungus growing outside. Sometimes I am surprised by where it is growing, and how alien it looks. I love taking pictures of them, too.
Abandoned Farm
- We were driving back from a trip out west, and we went off the beaten path in Saskatchewan. We found an abandoned farm and I thought it looked very photogenic. The mosquitoes were ferocious, but we managed to get a few pictures before they drove us away.

My Dad - The War Years
- My dad was in the Polish brigade of the Red Army during the second world war. He was born in Lvov (AKA Lemberg) in 1923. At that time, Lvov was part of Poland. When war broke out in 1939, the authorities came to take my grandfather to a Russian work camp. He had injured his back, so they took my 16 year-old father instead. My dad had mechanical aptitude, having worked in a bicycle factory. When Russia turned against Germany in 1941, he was conscripted into the Polish Brigade of the Red Army. He was a driver and a mechanic, driving trucks that started airplanes. Later he became a tank driver, driving a T-34 tank and fought in some of the major tank battles. He finished the war as a driver for Colonel Malutin, who was later appointed a General. My dad had many medals, which he said were for surviving. He left them behind in France when he and my mom came to Canada in 1950. I scanned these photos after he died in 2004.
